“Does the political of\ufb01ce that an individual occupies primarily determine one\u2019s overall political in\ufb02uence, \u00a0or can the same of\ufb01ce be strengthened or weakened depending on the\u00a0of\ufb01ce-holder? \u00a0Thus far, it has proven dif\ufb01cult to empirically separate the of\ufb01ce from the\u00a0of\ufb01ceholder. We argue that provided there is an indicator for the overall individual political\u00a0in\ufb02uence and there is suf\ufb01cient variability among individuals taking the same of\ufb01ce, being\u00a0promoted and demoted into different of\ufb01ces, it is possible to estimate separate latent individual and institutional effects. Our model thus provides a new instrument to measure the level\u00a0of (de)institutionalisation in a political regime.
